speak up posted an article about a great find found on the obama campaign's website. i'm not going to post my views on who should be the next president, but i'm really liking the multiple-audience-identification here and the smart design. i think it'd be interesting seeing who people would vote for based on the candidate's logo. might be something to investigate.
low and behold, john sent me a link this morning to a site he said i'd love: designers-who-blog - a site that features blogs about design by designers, about life by designers, about blogs by designers, and, of course, designers who blog. it's probably one of my most favorite sites to come across, as it has led me to many many more sites that have been added to my bookmarks bar - like joshuaink (pictured left, which i bookmarked bc it is a greatly illustrative yet simply designed blog that i read very quickly but was amazed bc of how pretty it is - so yes, i basically just "looked at the pictures").
i'm not only jealous of the sites they feature bc some of them are extremely gorgeous and are evidence that these designers know way more about designing blogs than i do, but bc my other form of green-ness is they're featured on the designers-who-blog site.
my jealousy is miniscule to the tremendous amount of jubilation i have to finding a great resource and community of like-minded bloggers. it's like discovering mecca.
it's a dark day.
emigre has released their last issue.
i'm super bummed.
on my first annual report, i got to work with chris and suzanne salvo - a husband and wife team that goes all over the world to shoot for their clients, all year round. i still get emails saying, "going to india, let us know if you need us to shoot anything there for ya!"
some beautiful stuff on their website - pretty for oil and gas and all the corporate stuff - but the photography in the world category rivals that of national geographic. commentary about their travels can be found here.
bottlecap studios is a cool site i tripped over today while looking for an image to borrow for a comp. nice site, very good looking, with sweet navigation - except the music makes me feel like i'm trapped in jello. not that i don't like it - i do. it works very well with the site animation. it just evokes a bit of a gelatinous feeling not easily accomplished by a website. and hey, everyone loves jello.
a link off the QBN Bookshelf section of newstoday led me to you work for them - a cool online bookstore that i wish was down the street, rather than online. it'd be across the street from the phaidon design library, caddycorner to the graphic-designer's-salary-friendly design matters outlet store, and i could get to it easily on my environmentally conscious and stylish hybrid range rover.
even though that little scenario is as close to real becoming real as the current administration is to being trustworthy, you work for them is a great site full of design classics, specialty short-run, hand-made items, worldwide design products unavailable in many local markets, typefaces, stock design, other tools, books, mags, videos, cd-roms, t-shirts - and most importantly inspiration.
browsing through Newstoday and ended up on pillowhead.net. the landing page was quite beautiful, so i delved in some more, and saw some gorgeous bleeping artwork.
you should really see for yourself.
UnderConsideration has launched an exciting online initiative called the design encyclopedia - modeled after Wikipedia and TypoWiki.
the design encyclopedia has a very easy user interface once you login to add or edit definitions. you can also add upload corresponding photos pretty easily as well.
both the design encyclopedia and typowiki are in beta, and they are still ironing out the bugs. nonetheless, i found it exciting contributing to the definition of bestine.
i see both of these being huge resources in the near future.
core77
i love core77. it's just a wicked site, full of information, articles, discussions, "clogger" (their community blog) and a photo gallery filled to the brim of great design exhibitions and festivals taking place around the world - so you can live vicariously through them by surfing their images as you sit in front of your monitor at work trying to overcome your designers' block.
a couple of articles to whet your palette:

Massive design for the masses?
and most recently, a nicely written book review of Cracking the Whip by Ralph Caplan.
this is a great bookmark to have. not to mention their email newsletters. one of the only email subscriptions i keep bc they dont stuff my mailbox.
i'm including the category "raves" to desidiom bc i know that when a paper rep or a photographer or a printer goes out of their way to make your job either easier, better, within the budget or all of the above - it can make everyone a lot happier - the designer, the creative director, the account people, the client - and that's definitely something to rave about, right? and why not share that information with fellow creatives?
if you have someone in particular, or more generally, a company, mill, printer, etc. - please email me, who, what, and why you're crazy about them, and i'll post it on desidiom.
i had an interesting chance to work with sarah one hot day in august, caked with makeup, with taller hair than i've ever had before, and ants crawling between my toes. but now that it's nearing the end of september - i can hardly remember the burning heat of that scorching afternoon - but instead i think of how cool she was to work with and how awesome the photos turned out in the end.
check out her site here.
